Quebec universities in crossfire of language politics

Across the globe, countries are straining to maintain their language and
culture against the onslaught of English, the demands of globalisation and
the rise of nationalism. A common and conflict-ridden terrain for
addressing the problem has been education, where the state can control
language in a variety of ways to meet political ends.

Recent policies targeting Anglophone universities and out-of-province and
international students in Quebec, Canada, give weight to that assertion.
They also lay bare the potentially negative consequences for universities
and the surrounding economy caught in a web of shifting politics and
government officials unwilling to look beyond immediate priorities and
interests.
