CALL FOR PAPERS:
Urban Language and Literacy Chicago Area
[Preliminary Submission Date: January 10, 2000
Final Submissions: MAY 2000]
The Chicago Area Language and Literacy Research Project (CHILL) at the
University of Illinois at Chicago is taking submissions for an upcoming
edited volume of papers on language in various Chicago communities. Ideal
pieces pertain to ethnic/racial, class or other groups and their oral
and/or written language use across the Chicago area or in specific Chicago
neighborhoods. Studies may include ethnographies of communication,
literary analysis, classroom pragmatics, discourse analysis, or related
areas, with particular emphasis on the interplay between home or community
language practices and formal education. Our goal is to represent most
major speech communities in Chicago in a volume that heightens awareness
about how linguistic practices impact educational and social success in an
American urban environment. The volume's intended audience includes
educators, sociologists, sociolinguists, anthropologists, and policy planners.
