In 1999 the University of Auckland had over 650 students enrolled in Japan
ese language, literature and cultural courses taught in the Asian Languages
and Literatures Department,
which also teaches Chinese, Indonesian and Korean.
The Japanese section has an establishment of 12 full time tenured staff. T
hese three positions are also tenurable. Research-based teaching is the norm
and all Japanese staff contribute
to the language teaching.
The University is actively encouraging a higher proportion of graduate stu
dents among it 25,000 enrolment. Staff in Asian Languages and Literatures su
pervise graduate research and
engage in graduate teaching.
In 2000 the study of Asia at the University will be reconfigured with the
anticipated formation of a School of Asian Studies. The new School will brin
g language and literature
specialists into closer cooperation with teachers, and researchers on Asia
in other disciplines, (History, Sociology, Politics, Economics etc). The new
school will also establish clearer
pathways through language and Asian studies for students. The 80 faculty m
embers from various disciplines engaged in teaching and research on Asia at
the University of Auckland
constitute the largest body of Asia-related expertise in New Zealand.
Auckland, with a population of one million, is New Zealands largest city w
ith the commercial, cultural and international amenities expected of a major
urban area with strong family and other ties with Asia.
The Appointments
The positions are available at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, d
epending on qualifications and experience. If you wish to be considered only
for a
Senior Lectureship, please clearly indicate this on your application.
Tenure
This appointment may lead to the granting of tenure after successful compl
etion of an initial term of four years.
Qualifications
Specialists in any area of Japanese studies (linguistics, cultural
studies, literature, social sciences) are welcome to apply. Applicants with a
research record in classical or modern literature or in language pe
dagogy are particularly urged to apply.
Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent (or expect to receive on
prior to taking up an appointment in 2000).
Applicants should have a near-native competence in both Japanese an
d English.
Applicants are invited to submit a statement of teaching philosophy
and a sample of their research writing.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor through the Head of Departm
ent and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts for such research, teaching and
examining duties as may be required.
Salary
This will be determined with regard to your qualifications and experience
in the Lecturers scale.
The Lecturers scale commences at NZ$47,036 pa and rises by six annual incr
ements to NZ$56,189 pa.
The Senior Lecturers scale commences at NZ$59,800 pa and rises by four ann
ual increments to NZ$68,698 pa. With promotion in the Senior Lecturers
Scale this can be extended by three steps to NZ$74.902 pa.
Commencement Date
To be arranged prior to second semester 2000 (July).
