I second the suggestion of Hannerz. I've found his (1992) Cultural
Complexity: Studies in the Social Organization of Meaning (Columbia U
Press) very useful, too.
Also, check out stuff by Robert Foster, especially if you want to look at
commodities and nationalism/transnationalism issues.
