Origin of the term "the dozens"

Let's be blunt: I am a clairvoyant, and I feel I must share with you a
reading that took to me on this subject. While excellent points have been
raised thus far, I believe we must look to a more obscure connection: events
surrounding the invention of Braille! Follow me, will you?: firstly, "the
dozens" is, no doubt, derivative of "the twelves", which is, if memory
serves, an old English contraction of the "two elves", which stand for,
undoubtedly, that modestly imp-ish pair, Adam and Eve (post-Eden, of
course). A bit of thinking and - ! "Paradise Lost" explodes into the midst
of our fox-hunt like a randy goose and if we take a gander at that
impressively honkin' work we inevitably stumble across its author John
Milton, who, all kidding aside, would likely have stumbled across us, being
blind. The facts that he was both a writer and blind fuse naturally into
what must be truth: a writing for the blind! Finally, we are rightfully left
with our initial reading: Braille!! (I have a cousin whose blind, but let's
leave that kettle of fish uncooked for the time being, yes, no!?!) Tata!
