Assistant Professor
Starting 2001-2002 Academic Year
(Fall Semester Begins August 20, 2001)
The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of
Anthropology/Linguistics in the School of Social Sciences.
THE UNIVERSITY: Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of The
California State University. Located 48 miles north of San Francisco, the
University has an enrollment of approximately 7,000 students with 400
faculty. The University is organized into six schools; Arts and
Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Natural Sciences, Social
Sciences and Extended Education. Within the traditional structure is an
interdisciplinary school of liberal studies. The University offers
bachelor's degrees in 33 fields and master's degrees in 12.
THE DEPARTMENT: At the undergraduate level, the Anthropology/Linguistics
Department offers a B.A. in anthropology and a minor in Linguistics. At
the graduate level it offers an M.A. in Cultural Resources Management. In
addition, departmental faculty members are core participants in the Human
Development major and in the Certificate Program in Teaching English as a
Second Language. Committed to an integrated four-field approach in
anthropology, the present full-time faculty consists of one biological
anthropologist, two historical archaeologists, one linguistic
anthropologist, and two sociocultural anthropologists. In addition an
applied linguist current fills a temporary part-time position in

DUTIES OF THE
POSITION: The teaching load consists of 3-4 undergraduate courses a
semester, with various courses in sociocultural anthropology scheduled over
a two-year cycle. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising
responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or
committee work, participate in department-wide discussions, and are
expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Department seeks a teacher-scholar with a serious
commitment to undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts setting whose
fieldwork experience and training may provide a bridge between traditional
ethnographic approaches and recent studies of global and transnational
phenomena. Minimum requirements consist of a Ph.D. in sociocultural
anthropology completed by the time of appointment and specialization in
environmental or ecological aspects of anthropology, fieldwork or practical
experience in applied or development aspects of anthropology outside the
U.S., an interest in collaborative teaching and research within the four
fields of anthropology and interdisciplinarily, and an interest in
developing linkages, particularly through internships, between the
Department and the surrounding community. We seek a candidate who can
contribute towards shaping a critical and applied/developmental
anthropological perspective within our program.
To be recommended for tenure the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory
performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research,
creative achievement and professional development; service to the
University; and public service and service to the community. Although
tenure can be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the
normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time
probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the
normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the
President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the
department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s)." Tenure is
required for promotion above Associate Professor.

RANK and SALARY: Actual hiring salary is dependent upon educational
preparation and experience; salary range is approximately $41,000 -
$44,000. Salaries are subject to any CSU System faculty contract salary
increases.
