here at the University of Virginia. Media Studies is

Assistant Professor in Media Studies
The newly established undergraduate, interdisciplinary
program in Media Studies at the University of
Virginia seeks a full-time, tenure-track
assistant professor with research interests in the history
and theory of media (print, telecommunications, broadcast,
film, and/or digital). Candidate will teach courses in the
core curriculum and in any area of his/her expertise at
the undergraduate level.
Participation in development of the graduate curriculum
for the planned MA in Digital Media, and in graduate
programs in the candidate's area of disciplinary expertise
are also possible. Teaching load is two courses per
semester, plus additional responsibilities in advising
majors, curriculum development, and other departmental and
program activities. Areas of specialization should include
knowledge of the theories of media, communication, and
representation, understanding of contemporary institutions
and constraints (legal, economic, cultural), effects of
globalization, and aesthetics and formal properties of
meaning production in media. Candidates should be prepared
to teach a comprehensive Introduction to Media Studies and
either an introduction to history/theory for majors or a
capstone seminar in some aspect of Media Studies. PhD
required by the start date, August 25, 2001. Deadline for
