font software

Dear linganthers,

I'm looking for font-making software that would allow me create fonts that
could be read by both PC and MAC.  I've used Fontographer in the past, but
only on the MAC.  Does anyone have experience with creating their own fonts,
and then using them on different machines and printers?
Thanks for any and all suggestions.
And I'd be happy to keep a list of responses, and make it available to the
group.
