Northern Arizona University
Dean, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Northern Arizona University (NAU) invites nominations and
applications for the Dean, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
Reporting to the Provost, the Dean provides college leadership for
instructional, budgetary, personnel and curricular matters and is
responsible for university procedures and policies at the College
level.
NAU is a Doctoral/Research University II institution with nearly
20,000 students in attendance between a residential campus in
Flagstaff and more than 20 statewide sites. Flagstaff is a
culturally rich community of 59,500 in the mountains of northern
Arizona with a four-season climate and numerous opportunities for
year-round outdoor activities.
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is an independent unit
within Northern Arizona University with approximately 85 full-time
faculty. The College consists of the Departments of Anthropology,
Criminal Justice, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology/Social
Work as well as several interdisciplinary programs, the Social
Research Laboratory and the Northern Arizona Regional Gerontology
Institute.
The College has over 1,800 undergraduate and 200 graduate majors, as
well as a strong service mission in NAU's liberal studies and other
curricular programs. We offer 21 BA/BS degrees, 7 degrees at the
Master's level, and a PhD program in Political Science. We have a
strong commitment to delivery of programming to rural areas,
particularly in the areas of Criminal Justice, Social Work and
liberal studies.
Qualifications Required
The Dean should have an earned doctorate in a discipline within the
College's areas of responsibility, a demonstrated background in
administration and leadership, a successful and significant
academic/scholarly or professional record of accomplishment, and a
minimum of five years of progressively responsible administrative
experience. The successful candidate will have a commitment to
undergraduate education, faculty development, graduate study and
scholarly activity.
Qualifications Desired
The successful candidate will have a combination of knowledge of
and/or experience in the following areas:
® An established record of leadership and increasing administrative
responsibility for academic programs, faculty, staff, and students in
one or more of the disciplines represented in the College.
® The ability to foster a collegial, collaborative environment with
students, staff, faculty, administrators and community professionals.
® A demonstrable record of scholarly activity within the candidate's
discipline.
