Hi Everybody

This is just a quick note to thank the people who've responded to my query
on quotative "like": Bambi Schieffelin, David Samuels, Harriet Ottenheimer,
Barbara Johnstone, Gary Toth, David Valentine, Hal Schiffman, Debra
Keller-Cohen, Nancy Lemoine, Mary Bucholtz, Peter Patrick, and Ellen
Contini-Morava. I'll compile and share a list of their resources as soon as
I can.

For now, I think Ellen and others identified the source that got my student
interested: Popular press coverage of an article by Muffy E. A. Siegel of
Temple University--recently in the _Journal of Semantics_
--by the _Washington Post_ (08/31/02), the AP's Michael Rubinkam (09/04/02),
and NPR. Also, there was an earlier Geoff Nunberg NPR segment on using
"like" on Fresh Air (03/14/01). A number of people mentioned more than one
article on quotative "like" from _American Speech_ and the _Journal of
Sociolinguistics_, and two mentioned their current contributions:

(1) Mary Bucholtz has a brief discussion of the phenomenon as part of a
larger argument in "From 'Sex Differences' to Gender Variation in
Scoiolinguistics", _Proceedings of NWAVE 30_, University of Pennsylvania
Department of Linguistics (2002).

(2) Debra Keller-Cohen and Cynthia Gordon have an article coming out
in the first issue of _Narrative Inquiry_ next year that includes some
discussion of this topic.

Thanks again for now.

Maggie Ronkin
