The apparently deviant pronunciation may arise from attempts by some
people involved with unix or linux to distinguish between 'demon' as in
'devil', and 'daemon' as in 'cron'. Although the original coiners of
this usage used the classic 'di:men', later usage has varied - perhaps
to escape charges of satanism - and may in some cases approach 'lemon'
in its North American variant.
