thanks to all who have responded offline to me so far on this topic. (and, in some cases, off it!)

The only citation so far in the area I was looking into is from Ellen Contini-Morava, who
pointed to something I should have known about as it's on my shelf -- John and Russell
Rickford's excellent book, Spoken Soul (2000, J Wiley & Sons), has a chapter (no 4,
pp 57-72, "Comedians and Actors") which among other sources draws on 1970s sitcoms
(Sanford & Son, Good Times) with brief analyses and excellent discussion. Thanks, Ellen!

Last week I commented to a class that I've often noticed how the briefest lay discussion about
attitudes to AAE easily brings up a whole complex of crucial issues instantly and without straining.
I guess this is also true about email postings to linguists!

If anyone else knows of other sources, please do tell me, I'm still interested.
(I was also interested in other responses, but am specifically looking in the area given.)
There must be SOMEthing more out there! cheers,
	-p-

PS the student query came from someone in Michigan i've never met -- i'll tell her about "Rickford and Son"...
