I thought Peter's e-mail important enough to raise the issue myself
with the NY Times. In their e-mail reply they addressed the issue with
Dr. Morgan, but did not clarify the Prof/Dr. issue - which they seem to
use interchangeably. Here is there reply:

Dear Kerim Friedman:
Our practice is to use "Dr." for anyone with an earned doctorate
(medical, academic, dental, whatever) who chooses to use it. Many,
especially academics, do not. Condoleezza Rice, for example, prefers
that we call her "Ms," even though she has a doctorate, and she has
told us that, so we call her "Ms."?
I don't know about Professor Morgan. If she has a doctorate, and uses
the title, we should have called her "Dr." (or, alternatively,
"Professor Morgan."
