Panel title - "Language and Landscape:  Practices of Representation"

Jennifer Dickinson and I are seeking two or three more papers for a panel
that focuses on the role of language in everyday practices of ethnic,
racial or national
representation as they relate to real or imagined physical landscapes.
Approaches can range from ideas about language and territorial claims, to
language ideologies as they map onto physical spaces, to media representations
of language as an index of socio-geographic difference.  Papers should engage
with ideas about how landscapes, and the people associated with them, are
represented through perceived or recognized linguistic features, and how these
representations in turn can form a set of practices through which language
contributes to the evaluation of people and landscapes.
