hi Leila,

Timothy Jay published two books on the subject of cursing:

Why We Curse: A neuro-psycho-social theory of speech, 1999.

and

Cursing in America: A psycholinguistic study of dirty language in the courts, in the movies, in the schoolyards and on the streets, 1992.

both published by Benjamins
see: http://www.benjamins.com

you probably know about the existence of Maledicta (subtitle: "the international journal of verbal aggression") but i mention it anyway in case you don't
there's a website too:
http://www.maledicta.org
problem is, most of the stuff published in Maledicta is highly descriptive and lacks theoretical perspective

Do people know of good recent material on cursing, either in the US or
elsewhere? As cursing is endemic in the transcripts that students
around here are turning in, would be useful to be able to give
students some theoretical tools for understanding the phenomenon.

best,

Leila
