Friends,
Passing this along as requested... Merle Collins is a
widely-respected author from Grenada, and as many of you know
Grenada/Carriacou is where most of my research has been focused. I
spoke with an old friend on Carriacou this morning and he said things
are not so bad there; "mainland" Grenada was much harder hit and
needs the most help. -Ron

>Dear Caribbeanists and Friends of the Caribbean community:
>
>I write regarding attempts to respond to the terrible situation created in
>Grenada by Hurricane Ivan.
>
>As you may know, a Category 4 Hurricane, Hurricane Ivan, devastated the
>tri-island Caribbean state of Grenada on Tuesday 7th September. Most
>reports indicate that ninety percent of homes were destroyed. The Prime
>Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, described the devastation as "beyond
>imagination".
>
>For those who don't me, I am a faculty member at the University of Maryland,
>and part of a group, mainly of Washington area Grenada nationals, who met
>with officials from the Grenada Embassy in order to discuss the current
>situation and determine ways of responding. A "First Response Priority
>List" was suggested by the Embassy and we have identified specific drop-off
>points. With this letter, I will include both list and drop-off points, and
>urge you to contribute in whatever way you can. Please also forward this
>appeal to anyone you think might be interested in contributing. The list is
>intended to respond to immediate needs, and we foresee that it may be
>necessary to add or eliminate items as time goes on. Please, therefore,
>respond urgently.
>
>Thank you.
>
>Sincerely,
