Valentina Pagliai
Dept. of Anthropology
Oberlin College
COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES, OBERLIN COLLEGE
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
FACULTY NON CONTINUING POSITION AVAILABLE
Assistant Professor of Anthropology
The Anthropology Department at Oberlin College invites applications for
a half-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and
Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of either one
semester full time or two semesters part-time, beginning in the fall of
academic year 2006-2007, and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant
Professor or Visiting Instructor of Anthropology.
The incumbent will teach courses in the general area of linguistic
anthropology. The teaching obligation is three courses including
introductory cultural anthropology and two upper level courses. For
the latter, we are especially interested in a candidate who is trained
in the ethnography of speaking and/or discourse analysis, who can teach
"Language in culture and society" and a seminar in any area related to
linguistic anthropology, including but not limited to the study of
language ideologies, language and power, gender and language, and
verbal art performance.
Oberlin College values excellence in teaching and candidates must
therefore have an outstanding record of teaching at the introductory
and advanced levels. While the appointee will be a linguistic
anthropologist, we expect that his or her teaching will complement the
four-field character of the department.
Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree
in hand expected by June, 2006.
To be assured of consideration, a letter of application, a Curriculum
vita, graduate academic transcripts, and the names of three referees,
should be sent to Linda Grimm, Acting Chair, Department of
Anthropology, 10 N. Professor St., Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH 44074,
by March 15th, 2006. Application materials received after that date may
be considered until the position is filled. Salary will depend on
qualifications and experience.
Oberlin College is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer
with a strong institutional commitment to the development of a climate
that supports equality of opportunity and respect of differences based
on gender, ethnicity, disability, and sexual orientation. Oberlin was
the first coeducational institution to grant bachelor's degrees to
women and historically has been a leader in the education of
African-Americans; the college was also among the first to prohibit
discrimination based on sexual orientation. In that spirit, we are
particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who
would contribute to the diversity of our faculty.
