Here is an unordered list of the suggestions I received. Many thanks
to everyone for being so quick and generous!
Barbara
Dell was the Voeglins' student at Indiana, I think, but his encounter
there (during summers?) with Kenneth Burke was important.

The Biographical dictionary of social and cultural anthropology
(London, New York Taylor & Francis Routledge, 2004) has an entry for
him. Probably has most of that stuff -- and I think it's available
online.
There is an entry for Hymes in Spolsky's (1999) 'Concise Encyclopedia
of Educational Linguistics':

Ethnologists -- Biography -- Dictionaries.
2.

Gaillard ; translated by James Bowman.

Also note that there is a charming article by Rob Moore in the
Autumn 2008 issue of the Reed Alumni Magazine, and Jan
Blommaert and others have done a full issue of something or
other in Europe on Dell.
You probably know Stephen O. Murray's two books relevant here,
with lots of biographical detail.
And, last but (maybe) not least, Wikipedia:

Subject: biographical information about Dell Hymes?
To: LINGANTH at listserv.linguistlist.org
Are there any sources (encyclopedias, for example) of basic
biographical information about Hymes -- where he studied, who he
studied with, etc.? Please respond directly to me; I'll post a list
if I end up with one. Thanks.
