*The University of Wyoming Department of Anthropology and the Anthropology
Graduate Student Council are seeking submissions for the Fall 2010 Rocky
Mountain Landscape and Memory Symposium to be held in Laramie Wyoming,
October 1st and 2nd, 2010.*
The symposium on landscape and memory will explore the multiple and complex
ways in which humans relate to and are shaped by the environments that
surround them. We embrace a broad theoretical framework that treats
landscape as an active element in shaping individual identities and
cultures. We are seeking submissions from scholars of all levels who are
actively engaging in research on topics related to landscape and memory.
This includes but is not limited to how landscape perception relates to
broader issues such as conservation and heritage. We highly encourage
submissions that go beyond consideration of the physical environment to
include cultural values of landscape and how landscapes recursively affect
individuals through memory, including approaches exploring art, poetry, and
aesthetics as they relate to both sacred spaces and everyday lived
environments.
The symposium will include public lectures and moderated sessions of student
papers. Invited speakers include Dr. Michael Harkin (University of Wyoming),
Dr. Michele Dominy (Bard College), Dr. Sylvia Rodriguez (University of New
Mexico) and Dr. Carole McGranahan (University of Colorado).
Submissions should include an abstract of 200 words or less, the paper
title, the participant’s full name and contact information, and the
participant’s affiliated institution. All submissions should be in Word
format and received no later than 5 pm Sept 1, 2010 at the e-mail address
below. *For those wishing to apply for student travel support, a simple
statement to that effect will ensure consideration.*
