Dear All,
I'm delighted to announce that the administration at Rutgers has approved
a new position in linguistic anthropology. (See job ad below.) I will
only tangentially be involved in the search, as I will be "on loan" to the
National Science Foundation for the next year or two, so questions about
the search should be directed to the chair of the search committee, Daniel
Goldstein (dgoldstein at anthropology.rutgers.edu).
One piece of advice, however: I strongly recommend that interested
candidates read up on the CITE (Critical Interventions in Theory and
Ethnography) program, the Department's cultural anthropology graduate
program, as it will be necessary to fit in well with that program.
Information about CITE can be found on the Department's website at
http://anthro.rutgers.edu. The other piece of advice I have is to apply
sooner rather than later -- don't wait for the deadline, in other words,
as the Department hopes to move quickly on this hire.
Good luck!
Laura
The Department of Anthropology at Rutgers, the State University of New
Jersey, invites applications for a tenure-track position in language,
culture and power at the Assistant Professor level to start Fall 2012,
subject to the availability of funding. We seek someone with expertise in
linguistic anthropology, whose work takes a critical approach to culture,
and who is capable of teaching courses in linguistic and cultural
anthropology at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Geographical
area is open, but preference will be given to candidates whose work
focuses on such regions as Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and
China. The ideal candidates research will engage questions that include,
for example, language and social inequality; language and human rights;
multilingual communities; language and gender; the language of politics
and public policy; or language, race and ethnicity.
The successful candidate will strengthen the Departments Critical
Interventions in Theory and Ethnography (CITE) program, which integrates
contemporary critical cultural and linguistic theories with deep
ethnographic engagement in a world transformed by globalization, with
special emphasis on the study of culture, equality, justice, and rights.
Candidates holding the Ph.D. are preferred, but in exceptional cases, ABDs
will be considered. Candidates should demonstrate excellence in teaching,
creative scholarship, and ongoing field research. Application materials
should include a curriculum vitae, a cover letter that includes a
statement of research and teaching interests, one writing sample of fewer
than 30 pages, and the names and contact information of three references.
Send materials (electronic submissions only, subject line should read
Anthropology Search) to Prof. Daniel Goldstein, Search Committee Chair,
at dgoldstein at anthropology.rutgers.edu. Review of applications will begin
October 1, 2011.
As one of 34 public US institutions that belong to the Association of
American Universities, Rutgers is among the leading research universities
in the US and Canada. Rutgers University is an equal
opportunity/Affirmative Action employer, with a historic commitment to
diversity.
