I refer you to an article by Jonah Lehrer, “The Truth Wears off”  
--published in the New Yorker a month or so ago, according to which  "overshadowing" 
has suffered from what Schooler and others have called  the “decline effect”
  --  the seeming regularity with which  previously strong research fin
dings fall by the wayside when scientists try to  replicate them. 
We may need to treat it with a degree of caution.
