Dear SLA Colleagues,

Are you interested in serving on the Committee on Language and Social
Justice? The current core members of the committee -- H. Samy Alim,
Jonathan Rosa, and Adrienne Lo -- have now completed their terms. So the
SLA Nominations Committee is seeking volunteers to fill the committee's
three seats. If you are interested in being considered for appointment by
the Executive Board to the core membership of the Committee on Language and
Social Justice for 2011-2012, please write to Paja Faudree at
paja_faudree at brown.edu.

If you are interested in participating in general or targeted activities of
the committee but are not intereested in being considered a core member,
please write to Paja Faudree at paja_faudree at brown.edu so that the
Nominations Committee can be aware of your interest. You will notice in
the instructions for the constitution of the committee (included below)
that the core members select the other members who will serve on the
committee.

The founding statements setting the charge and constitution of the
committee are as follows:

*Charge of the SLA Committee on Language and Social Justice: *

The charge of the SLA Committee on Language and Social Justice is to
increase awareness, both within the AAA and among the general
public, of the ways in which language is implicated in social
discrimination; and, where appropriate, to respond to specific
instances of language-related discrimination and injustice. To these
ends, the committee seeks to collect and disseminate knowledge concerning
language and social justice; to identify problems and issues in which
linguistic anthropologists can and should intervene, and to which
linguistic anthropological knowledge can and should be applied; to
organize, lead, and facilitate such interventions and applications; and to
advise the AAA Committee on Human Rights, the AAA Executive Board, and
other AAA bodies on how the AAA as a whole should respond to issues
concerning language and social justice.

*Constitution of the SLA Committee on Language and Social Justice:*

On an annual basis, the SLA Nominations Committee makes an open call
to the SLA membership for persons interested in serving on the Committee on
Language and Social Justice. Based on the results of the open
call, the Nominations Committee then makes a recommendation to the SLA
Executive Committee. Based on this recommendation and its own
deliberations, the SLA Executive Committee appoints three persons
to the Committee on Language and Social Justice, thus constituting a
core committee of three. The members of this core committee of three are
then free to recruit additional members and/or persons to help with
specific tasks, as they see fit.
The members of the core committee of three may designate one person among
themselves to serve as the committee's chair/organizer. There are no
limits on annual reappointment of any of the three core members.

Thank you,

SLA Nominations Committee
