2013 AAA Call for Papers

Reception in Action

Receivers and reception sites transform the meaning of texts even as they are denied responsibility for their production and transmission. Our panel asks how receivers adopt and adapt their roles in ways that substantially change relationships to speech and action that are understood as authored elsewhere. We pay particular attention to reception as moment when subjects and objects are vulnerable to transformation. Reception is a moment when histories of circulation may be embraced as part of the text, when material traces of transmission may merged with the message transmitted, and when novel evaluations of texts, people, and situations emerge. We seek to bring critically necessary tools to the possibilities of reception across a range of media and interactions. Our papers address three interrelated questions: First, what are the skills and practices involved in reception in particular historical moments and situations? Second, how does reception act as a site for the production of meaning? Finally, how do understandings of reception and receivership circulate and inform both production and interpretation? Viewing interaction from sites of reception reveals distinctive relationships: between material contexts of circulation and messages conveyed, between producers and audiences, and between multiple moments of receivership which may be distinguished or laminated in later reports.
