There is a special issue of Anthropological Quarterly from 2011 edited by
Fleming and Lempert on taboo and language which should be a great place to
start. There's also a piece I wrote that just came out in Language and
Society (2013), "Stigma and Ideological Constructions of the Foreign,"
that touches on the topic of avoidance.
