The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences <http://sydney.edu.au/arts/>  offers one of the most comprehensive and diverse range of humanities and social science studies in the Asia-Pacific region and is regularly ranked in the top 20 faculties of its kind in the world. The University has recently embarked on an extensive and ambitious building program to support research and teaching, and a major building refurbishment is slated for the faculty by 2016.

Linguistics has a celebrated history at Sydney, beginning with the appointment of the field linguist Arthur Capell in Anthropology in the 1940s. The Department of Linguistics was founded in 1975 with Michael Halliday as Foundation Chair. It has teaching and research strengths in analysis of media discourse, anthropological linguistics, applied linguistics, corpus linguistics, educational linguistics, functional grammar, language acquisition, syntactic theory and TESOL. It has formal affiliations with colleagues in a wide range of language programs, the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (PARADISEC) and the Faculty of Education and Social Work. Members of the Department are active in a cross-faculty research network on Language and Identity.

In December 2012, the latest Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) audit, a comprehensive national research assessment exercise that measures research quality within Australia's higher education institutions using a combination of indicators and expert review, ranked the linguistics field of research at the University of Sydney a 4, indicating research performance above world-class standard.

Following recent retirements of several senior staff members, the department is currently in an exciting phase of revitalisation, rebuilding its capacity through the recruitment of world-class academic staff, with Professor Nick Enfield recently appointed to lead the discipline.

In this exciting lectureship opportunity you will:

*         teach and develop curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a range of areas of linguistics including anthropological linguistics and/or morphology OR phonetics and phonology
*         contribute to the teaching of the Master of Crosscultural Communication (for the anthropological linguistics and/or morphosyntax focused position)
*         make an important contribution to the research strengths of the school, including regular publication in journals of high ranking and other quality outlets and the pursuit of research grants
*         supervise research higher degree students
*         develop effective interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the University
*         contribute to academic administration.
To be the successful candidate you will need:


  *   a PhD in linguistics
  *   the ability to teach at tertiary level in linguistics
  *   proven expertise and knowledge, research ability and research potential in linguistics
  *   evidence of your capacity to undertake academic administrative responsibilities
  *   the ability to work in a collegial and effective manner with a broad range of colleagues.

Remuneration package: Lecturer (Level B): a competitive remuneration package of $107,679 to $127,867 p.a. is available (consisting of a base salary $90,990 to $108,049 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer's contribution to superannuation).
