*LIB 2016*
*Language, Indexicality and Belonging*
*Linguistic Anthropology Conference*
*University of Oxford*
*April 7-8th 2016*
How do individuals use different registers of language to construct their
identities? How does linguistic humour ironise race relations in South
Africa? How does anti-colonial discourse relate to linguistic
prescriptivism? How do players express the sexism built into computer
games? These topics will be addressed by the keynote speakers at this
two-day Oxford conference that is open for general registration.
Four panels of presentations will delve deeper and wider into how
communities, conversations and creative characters exhibit the sense of
belonging to social groups, ideas and institutions. We shall explore how
language is used in situations from Taiwan to Montana, and from Senegal to
Kazakhstan.
