*A Virtual Symposium hosted by The American Philosophical Society *
*June 8-12, 2020*

Inspired by its 2021 exhibition, Dr. Franklin, Citizen Scientist
<https://www.amphilsoc.org/museum/exhibitions/dr-franklin-citizen-scientist>,
the American Philosophical Society Library & Museum is hosting a weeklong
symposium Evidence: The Use and Misuse of Data. This international
symposium is deeply interdisciplinary and features papers that consider the
ways evidence is used in the history of science, literary analysis, digital
humanities, the social sciences, and more.

The symposium will be held June 8-12, 2020 via Zoom. Sessions will take
place daily at 1:00pm EDT or 3:00pm EDT. Each session will include brief
presentations by the conference participants, comments by a moderator, and
a live Q&A session. Pre-circulated papers will also be available for
download to registered participants.

The event will kick off on Monday, June 8, at 1:00pm EDT with an opening
discussion with Drs. *Richard Shiffrin *(Indiana University,
Bloomington), *Stephen
Stigler* (The University of Chicago), and *Kathleen Hall Jamieson* (The
University of Pennsylvania) on their paper, “The Weighing of Evidence
Requires Expert Judgment and Consensus.” The discussion will be moderated
by *Linda Greenhouse *(Joseph Goldstein Lecturer in Law, Senior Research
Scholar in Law, and Knight Distinguished Journalist in Residence at Yale
University and President of the American Philosophical Society).

The symposium will conclude on Friday, June 12 at 3:00pm EDT with a final
discussion featuring Drs. *John R. McNeill *(Georgetown University) and *Robert
M. Hauser *(Executive Officer, American Philosophical Society), in
conversation with Dr. Patrick Spero (Librarian & Director, American
Philosophical Society Library & Museum).

The symposium is free of charge and open to the public, though registration
is required to attend and to access the papers.
