Visiting Fellows

The Center for Humanities and Information at The Pennsylvania State University seeks candidates for visiting fellowships. The fellowship is for one year and can be renewed for up to three years.

Focusing on critical and theoretical approaches to information, the Center brings together a diverse, interdisciplinary group of scholars who read and think widely across fields, geographical space, and historical time. Fellowships require teaching one course per year. Salary approximately $52,000; support also includes research/travel funding and a benefits package. Fellows have access to research design support, as well as to grant-writing and job market workshops, career mentoring, and archival/library support and research consultation. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Penn State’s University Park campus and to participate in the Center’s colloquia and other events. In addition, successful candidates must either have demonstrated a commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and diverse campus community, or describe one or more ways they would envision doing so, given the opportunity.

In their application letters, candidates should address two topics:

(1) the relation between their work and critical approaches to information studies, including historical questions of (but not limited to) race, class, gender, disability, and sexuality; or the relation between their work and questions of climate change throughout the ages and their information environments, including storytelling, disinformation, changes in everyday life, and the like.

(2) their interest in and approach to teaching an interdisciplinary, general education course called “What is Information?” that combines social scientific and humanistic approaches to the topic.

Applicants must have a PhD (obtained by August 12, 2022) and a record of peer-reviewed work.
