Visiting Assistant Professor – Linguistic Anthropology
University of South Carolina

The Department of Anthropology at the University of South Carolina invites applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professorship in linguistic anthropology beginning August 16, 2022. We seek applicants who have conducted ethnographically grounded research with a commitment to social justice (which includes sociolinguistic justice), and whose theoretical and methodological approach to the study of language complements the existing expertise of faculty within the Department of Anthropology well as in the Interdepartmental Linguistics Graduate Program. Geographical area and language(s) of specialization are open. Successful candidates must demonstrate an ability to teach courses from introductory to advanced levels courses in linguistic anthropology (undergraduate and graduate) and be comfortable offering topical undergraduate courses that articulate well with our four field training in anthropology.

Minimum Qualifications:

•  We seek candidates with a Ph.D. by the start date of the appointment with training in linguistic anthropology, preferably in an anthropology program, although applicants trained in linguistic anthropology within a linguistics program or closely related program will also be considered.
•  Demonstrated inclusive excellence teaching linguistic anthropology to undergraduate students.
•  Experience teaching issues that concern diversity and inequality.
Preferred Qualifications

  *   Expertise in either collaboration-based, antiracist, or anticolonial teaching practices.
  *   Experience teaching courses that scaffold methods for qualitative data collection, analysis, and writing.
  *   Commitment to teaching and/or mentoring first-generation, non-traditional, and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and LGBTQIA+ college students.

Appointment Terms

This is a nine-month, non-tenure-track position to begin August 16, 2022. The teaching load is 2:2 (i.e. two 3-credit courses per semester), with the expectation of light service and undergraduate advising in Anthropology. The salary for this position is $60,000. The appointment is for one-year, renewable for a second year based on Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
