Hello Fellow Linganthlings (don’t you just love morphology?),

Yes, this is a known issue; no, I don’t believe this is a scam; yes, we have two volunteers still administering this list (Ron Kephart and myself); and yes, I have been trying to work with admins from the Linguistlist.org <http://linguistlist.org/> folk (who provide our server) about a number of recent issues, among them a huge number of bounces (especially from Gmail accounts), one some days it’s hit 100-200!  They have given some updates, but have not always been able to respond to my queries and requests.  I guess they are working on volunteer labor, too.

I can report that there was a server upgrade last month that triggered a slew of automatic unsubscriptions, apparently from accounts (again, mostly Gmail) that had not been able to receive postings (among them I saw accounts for colleagues who have passed in the last year or two, so those seemed legitimate).

There also seems to be some email servers at various institutions (and possibly within the Gmail systems) that now flag some servers (and all messages from all lists served by those servers) as channels for spam.  I’m trying to track some of this down to see where we might be able to get admins for those cranky servers to reset flags to allow messages from this list to be permitted.

HERE’S SOMETHING YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO TO HELP:  If you are getting these "undeliverable messages" notifications, could you reach out to your email system administrators at your own institution or service providers and ask them if there is something *they* can do about their system’s setting for messages coming from lists at servers in the linguistlist.org domain?  You are likely to get a response from your admins that range anywhere from, “nope, not our problem” to “let’s see what we can do about that.”  If you get the latter, please do let me know, and send me the contact info for that admin so I can reach out to them and find out what they might have discovered.  This way, I might be able to send that solution along to other admins who might not be willing or able to do the investigations and troubleshooting themselves, but who might be willing to make a fix if given a “recipe” to follow.

Our apologies for all these hassles (and every time any of you get one of these messages, we Ron and I do get a notice each and every time, too, so we share your pain with that multiplier!).

- if you can vaccinate, please do;
- be mindful that there are still times and places that wearing a mask is required because not everyone can vaccinate;
- cloth masks aren’t very effective against recent COVID-19 variants, N95s and KN94s are much better;
- keep washing your hands frequently.
