We are thrilled to announce that Anna Babel will serve as the next Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology.

Anna is a Professor in the Hispanic Linguistics Program and Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Ohio State University. She brings to the journal a wealth of editorial experience, including editing or co-editing two academic volumes and in the process of publishing a Thematic Issue with the Journal of Sociolinguistics. Anna also served as the co-editor, with Aaron Ansell and Ilana Gershon of the Society for Linguistic Anthropology column in Anthropology News between 2015-2017. Her focus has been on working with groups of scholars who are not only interdisciplinary in terms of their methods and theoretical orientations, but who also represent a range of career stages and academic positions, as well as types of institutions and geographical locations.

Sincere thanks to all who participated in the process of identifying the next editor of the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology. This includes those who put their names forward as candidates, the many of you who served as references, and the multiple parties who considered or discussed the editorial position. Special thanks are owed to interim editor Paul Manning and interim associate editor, Jennifer Delfino, who kept the journal running smoothly over the last several months and have served contributors and the new editor so well in doing so.

The many conversations about the journal and its future were incredibly generative, and we made careful notes about members' wishes and hopes. Two themes emerged quite clearly. First, members want the journal to expand its reach and its audience, with particular interest in engaging authors and audiences outside North America, welcoming and hosting conversation with neighboring disciplines and subdisciplines, and developing a set of practices to make the journal more accessible to a wider range of readers and authors, whether through social media outreach or innovations such as audio-essays. A second, closely related theme is members' wish to have a cutting-edge journal, which creatively mobilizes our field's expertise on language and communication by experimenting with genre, multimodal presentation, translation practices, and orthography. There was also tremendous agreement about the journal as a critically important site that we continue to deepen and develop the work of linguistic anthropology.

We selected an Editor-in-Chief who not only clearly shares members' vision about the next stage of the journal, but who also articulated very clear ideas about how to put these goals into practice-ideas formed through a wealth of experience. We have full confidence as Anna takes the helm of the journal on January 15th and look forward to what is to come over the next three years of her term.

Please join us in congratulating and supporting Anna Babel's service to the field.

Summerson Carr (President, SLA) and Jillian Cavanaugh (President-Elect, SLA)
