FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The English Department of Hunter College, City University of New York invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sociolinguistics/Applied Linguistics to begin August 2025. Area of specialization is open, but we particularly welcome candidates with expertise in ethnographic methods, multilingualism, and youth in K-12 educational settings.
We seek dynamic researchers and educators who will contribute to the life of the department and take an active role in shaping the future of our linguistics and rhetoric undergraduate concentration and MA English Adolescent Education program (taught in collaboration with the School of Education). Course assignments will include undergraduate courses in linguistics and sociolinguistics, and graduate courses on teaching multilingual learners in ELA classrooms. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop courses related to their specialty. The candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester at the undergraduate or graduate level, pursue original scholarly research in their field, and participate in the administrative life of the department and the college.
Hunter College is the largest college in the City University of New York (CUNY). Founded in 1870, it is also one of the oldest public colleges in the country. More than 23,000 students currently attend Hunter, pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in more than 170 areas of study. Hunter College’s English Department offers undergraduate and graduate courses in British, American, postcolonial and global literatures; literary theory and criticism; rhetoric, composition and linguistics; and creative writing. Our students and faculty come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique life experiences into our classrooms. QUALIFICATIONS
A PhD in Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a related field is required. We seek applicants who have exceptional promise or a strong record of achievement in research and teaching, and a commitment to working in multicultural and urban educational settings.
