Dear SLA organizers, dear list folk,
as a European working on Caribbean and Native American studies I find it exclusionary to not host an (Informal) hybrid conference so that we can also learn from the program. Now I have to email all interesting potential authors. And are they really waiting for that? I mean, since Trump took stage, as a trans* person I cannot / don't want to enter the United States anymore and I just regret not being able to attend such an interesting and utterly fascinating program!
All best from the Netherlands and Belgium,Jen Van der Aa

Dear Colleagues,
I’m writing with a friendly reminder that the deadline for booking discounted hotel rooms for the SLA 2025 Conference in Chicago is nearly upon us, coming up on Monday, April 28. The SLA has secured favorable group rates for rooms at three hotels near the conference venue, Ida Noyes Hall on the University of Chicago campus. To ensure you get a room near the conference venue and receive the discounted group rate, please make your reservations as soon as possible using the direct booking links on the conference website: https://www.2025slaconference.org/housing.
Please book within the contracted hotel blocks if at all possible! Conference attendees are strongly encouraged to stay at one of the contracted hotels, which are vetted properties and the closest hotels to our conference venue. When you book outside of the block or make reservations elsewhere, the SLA does not get credit for those rooms. And when the minimum number of contracted rooms goes unsold, the SLA must pay penalty fees to the hotels. Finally, other accommodations have not been vetted, so the SLA cannot speak to the safety or quality of those properties. Please reserve at one of the designated conference hotels to help us keep overall costs of the conference as low as possible for the SLA. Thank you for doing your part, and we look forward to seeing you in Chicago at the end of May!
Sincerely,
Thea, on behalf of the SLA 2025 Conference Steering Committee
