Dear All,
Over the past few years, I've been advising the International Baccalaureate
Organization (IBO) as they've been creating a new Language and Culture
course that is partly based on my *Living Language* book. The course is
being piloted at the Standard Level (SL) in 25 high schools around the
world, and we're currently developing a higher level (HL) version of the
course. Eventually, all IB schools will have the option to offer the course
at both levels.
One unit proposed for the HL version of Language & Culture is a
"Practitioners' Unit" that would give students a taste of how different
kinds of professionals use the insights of linguistic anthropology in their
work. We're therefore hoping to create a sort of *"IB Language & Culture
speakers' bureau <https://forms.gle/fZbQf1XTKZswxZdRA>" *-- a list of
people who would be willing to speak to a Language & Culture class about
their experiences as academic researchers, indigenous language advocates,
language policy analysts, translators, human centered design specialists,
cross-cultural business consultants...or whatever positions might involve
the use of skills, concepts, theories, and insights drawn from linguistic
anthropology.
Would you be willing to speak to a high school class about your work? If
so, please fill out this short form <https://forms.gle/fZbQf1XTKZswxZdRA>
to give us an idea of the topic(s) you might discuss, and I'll add you to
our *"IB Language & Culture speakers' bureau."* You won't be committing to
anything now, and if contacted later, you can always say no. Think of this
as a chance to create a pipeline of students who become interested in
linguistic anthropology at the high school level. Already, as you can see
below from a sampling of the students' comments, the course is changing the
students' minds and lives.
I hope you'll consider joining the "IB Language and Culture speakers'
bureau." Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Thanks!
Laura Ahearn
