Dear Colleagues,
The Language and Social Justice Committee (LSJ) of the Society for Linguistic Anthropology (SLA) is holding a general meeting on Friday, Feb 28th from 2:30 - 4:00 PM (Eastern time).
The main purpose of this meeting is to (re)establish community and organize working groups/collaboration around specific initiatives in the context of the current socio-political climate.
During our last general meeting some initiatives for which folks expressed interest were:
* Mother languages/heritage languages/indigenous languages (e.g., International Mother Language Day)
* Language and gender/LGBTQ+
* Accessibility (not only related to disability, but also economic, epistemic, etc.)
* Crowdsourcing scholarly and general interest pieces and resources that discuss language and social justice topics that folks can use in their teaching, public outreach, etc.
* Language “destandadization”/raciolinguistics/academic language
* Surveillance/freedom of speech
* Book club
* Essay prizes for students
* Other ideas/pressing concerns can be discussed
Please use this link<https://csus.zoom.us/meeting/register/godrE2oTTSWfcVf6t0PRGQ> to register and receive the Zoom link (you will be asked which topic/initiative you are most interested in. This is just to get a sense of where the main interest(s) may be for this meeting but you are not committing to anything at this point).
For accessibility and accommodations, please email Nadxieli at toledobustamante at csus.edu<mailto:toledobustamante at csus.edu> by February 21st.
Warmly,
Nadxieli Toledo Bustamante, on behalf of the LSJ Steering Committee
