Greetings all,
A note to let you know how much these messages and ideas are appreciated as the SLA Executive Board works to help coordinate effective public communications from linguistic anthropologists. We are thinking not only in response to the most recent Executive Order declaring English the official language of the U.S., but are also trying to generate methods for supporting members’ messaging around other language related issues that arise in the months and years to come. Luckily, across the LSJ and the SLA Exec Board, we do have some collective experience with this and we have already identified many possible ways forward. Please stay tuned for more in the next few weeks.
All best in the meantime,
Summerson

Hello all!
Sharing this statement in case it's of interest: https://www.tesol.org/news/tesol-statement-on-the-exec-order-designating-english-as-the-official-language-of-the-us/
One of the things that stood out to me about the statement is that it includes a commitment of the organization to these actions:
* Partner with peer associations advocating against this divisive policy to support and advance fair and equal access to public services, especially education.
*
* Work with government agencies to ensure that the progress made over the past two decades, especially the development of each agency’s language access plan under EO 13166, is not only preserved but continues.
*
* Petition congressional action that recognizes and values the linguistic and cultural diversity of our nation and supports the tenets of EO 13166 in encouraging improvement and access to government services for multilingual learners of English.
*
* Submit public comment to the U.S. commission on Civil Rights briefing, Language Access for Individuals with Limited English Proficiency<https://www.usccr.gov/meetings/2025/03-21-language-access-individuals-limited-english-proficiency>, on the importance in overcoming language barriers for access to government services.
*
* Provide education and advocacy resources to our members and the public that serve multilingual learners and their families.

Thank you all for these resources and efforts and for keeping the conversation going on matters related to social justice.
The LSJ is currently working on a number of initiatives including on the topic of surveillance/freedom of speech but none so far specifically targeted at issuing a statement for the making English as official language. However, this is something we can certainly add to our efforts of public outreach and it would certainly be helpful to continue to receive recommendations on how to do this or word this, as some of you have been doing — we appreciate it. Feel free to get in touch with us personally, the co-chairs of the LSJ Steering Committee: Nadxieli (toledobustamante at csus.edu<mailto:toledobustamante at csus.edu>) or myself (krm2144 at tc.columbia.edu/<http://krm2144@tc.columbia.edu> katherineravenna at gmail.com<mailto:katherineravenna at gmail.com>).
We are currently working on a document that summarizes some of our discussions from our previous February General meeting, including discussions around our initiatives, which we hope to share with you in the incoming days.
Thank you all for this.
Kind regards,
Katherine

You don't often get email from aaa-task-group-on-language-and-social-justice at googlegroups.com<mailto:aaa-task-group-on-language-and-social-justice at googlegroups.com>. Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>
[This email originated from outside of OSU. Use caution with links and attachments.]
This is our moment. We need to get a statement into newspapers, substacks, ASAP. We all teach about this. We can take AC's statement as a foundation and try to get it published widely.
