Hi Mara and all,
Whatever the student gets, I would say just make sure it is omnidirectional or has an omnidirectional setting (for getting all the voices sitting in a circle) and that there is some way to control levels, either on the recorder or if it plugs in to a computer or phone, on the device. If they are looking for a stand-alone audio recorder, I like Tascam handheld recorders (they seem to all have a “DR” at the beginning of their model numbers).
Take care,
Steve

Hi Mara,
Zoom brand recorders are great. Their cheapest one<https://www.amazon.com/Zoom-H1essential-Accessibility-Microphones-Microphone/dp/B0CSL4PXDV/ref=sr_1_6?crid=LHY75LD00PU7&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.G_Pxpl6DBzPpFX189JqkysAyo5bbN38yNScANB3BNf1lfJYXpvjRxJkSBPnfwJKm7ptvjDm4J41emaFijawECHgwRPQ-xD62zUv9abALXWFsehgDb8LKPsYtuIlT1C1ppuKs6UuR5KjKcC6azIL9ZBCqe0bchp3KIWBYMiPjKZEJsRJ3jpScV6MogxJYorJW1UisdcuIDnIwfIPiKNqojYhJ5ab5QM4QktkgDSgZOPweoeRkAESvgDzcr8u6haq3wHrm1XCjRPmb3rlpswqZXeq456dj5H2Hu5lq6yibynOIllplAzKTEvilB6dH53ILj64vHwO47IIc_lmhIujeBtB97pE0TNDQfaFn2xLsT_Yej_pAYx929KiPNYHk0lbu37CxA5_1OAztzO_l-zge3cmw_JRQA1mCLZEdwxh0lQnDOzlHDujbwRU_h_W3BkB1.skeW0zFybUt_usdFtCAU8awgq-b-Is4f9KyRM12DNlA&dib_tag=se&keywords=zoom%2Brecorder&qid=1742588450&sprefix=zoom%2Brecorder%2Caps%2C119&sr=8-6&th=1> is usually more than adequate. I'd buy a "dead cat" or windscreen for it, some rechargeable batteries and a charger, extra SD cards, and a tiny little tripod, too.

Hello,
Asking on behalf of a graduate student currently conducting fieldwork: Are there recommendations for audio recording devices that would work well to record a round table-style conversation among 9-12 people?
Thank you!
