Hi everyone,
Thank you so much to those of you who joined our first meeting of the SLA Fieldwork Support Group for graduate students! We had a great discussion about thoughts and plans for this group and we hope this will create a welcoming space for all of us to exchange fieldwork-related ideas and experiences.
At the meeting we discussed meeting monthly via Zoom on the last Wednesday of the month from 5-6pm EST and supplementing the more structured Zoom meeting with a more informal group chat. (More information about an additional meeting time/date to accommodate more time zones is coming soon!) Our sessions will take the format of a 30min discussion based on a particular theme, and then we will open up the session for general discussion for us to share thoughts, challenges, successes, just vent, and anything else!
The SLA Fieldwork Support Group Chat is meant to be an informal space where we can share fieldwork experiences and advice, post quick updates, ask questions, share concerns, and of course spam one other with fieldwork photos/videos/audio messages and more!

As decided at our last session, the topic for our next meeting on Wednesday, May 28th is “All things Data”! What kind of data do you observe/record/create/use? Brainstorm the ways you create and produce data and how you understand phenomena in the field as data. You do not have to formally prepare anything to discuss, rather this will be a general discussion exchanging experiences with data in our fieldwork.
Next session:
Wednesday, May 28th
Topic: “All things Data”!
Time: 5:00pm - 6:00pm EST
On Zoom (link will be sent out closer to May 28th)
Please also share this group/information with your friends and colleagues. All graduate students working on ling anth/language in social context-related topics are welcome to join both the WhatsApp group and our monthly meetings.
We look forward to seeing you on May 28th and chatting with you on WhatsApp even sooner! As always, please feel free to reach out to us with any questions, thoughts, or concerns.
Best wishes,
Noelia and Nikolina, your SLA Graduate Student Reps
