[Linganth] LSJ General Meeting, October 10, 2025 (REMINDER)

Judith Pine pinej at wwu.edu
Sun Oct 12 00:22:52 UTC 2025

Thank you for keeping this firmly forward for us, Ana Celia!

My teaching schedule did not allow me to attend the LSJ online meeting but I will be in New Orleans and look forward to attending the LSJ meeting there and to hopefully many productive conversations. I do not trust my ability to accurately translate the letter but I have of course signed and have circulated it among my colleagues.

As an additional means of being part of the public discourse I am trying to think up a good protest sign for the Oct 18th No Kings rally. Needs to be something that communicates the ideas quickly and catchily so that it could be picked up on the interwebz perhaps? Maybe if we had a shared sign slogan of some sort, showing up at rallies across the country?

Please PM me if you are interested in brainstorming about this!

Yours,
Judy

As we meet, work, and interact in physical and virtual spaces centered on Western Washington University, I acknowledge that our university is located on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish Peoples who have lived here from time immemorial.

Subject: Re: LSJ General Meeting, October 10, 2025 (REMINDER)

Thank you for your great work, and this important meeting, Nadxieli. The issues raised are so critical at this time that I am surprised there were not more faculty present. I urge those of you who are concerned about the many instances of linguistic injustice that the world, and especially the USA, are experiencing to sign up now for whatever issue interests you the most, and attend the LSJ meeting at the AAA, if you are going. [I will be speaking at the ASA conference in Puerto Rico, a time conflict. ]

In particular, if you are interested in helping to promote the LSJ statement regarding the President's declaration of English as the Official Language of the USA, please sign it, and let me know, so we can exchange ideas [pls note we are looking for translations of the statement]:

Even while this legislation seems symbolic and has questionable legality, we have already seen its tangible effects. In July 2025, the Department of Justice (DOJ) sent a memo to all federal agencies<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.google.com/url?q=https:**Awww.justice.gov*opa*pr*justice-department-releases-guidance-implementing-president-trumps-executive-order&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1760132733741957&usg=AOvVaw2XY4yYmb6mV7xbFkMU7fMc__;Ly8vLy8!!Mih3wA!Efzkn7Q0eeRtwEpd-E3E0ORZfDILC9iePfFfkRUVBab_pYpsanPCDTkTtGFQUj7lC5h--The9wsUF04BdBanvbk$>, continuing to push them to review their policies and rescind Title VI protections for persons with limited English proficiency and pressuring all federal agencies to start implementing the EO. In August 2025, the NY Post<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.google.com/url?q=https:**Anypost.com*2025*08*17*us-news*hud-launches-english-only-initiative-for-all-department-services-speak-with-one-voice-and-one-language*&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1760132733742325&usg=AOvVaw3xzJLwifEjtlpfKfgBYLAo__;Ly8vLy8vLy8!!Mih3wA!Efzkn7Q0eeRtwEpd-E3E0ORZfDILC9iePfFfkRUVBab_pYpsanPCDTkTtGFQUj7lC5h--The9wsUF04B4dt2UQU$> published an article about the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) elimination of materials in languages other than English as well as support/interpretation services, citing the "English Only" EO. A few months prior, HUD had also indicated it would collude with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), even though only citizens qualify for their federal programs. HUD is the federal agency that deals with housing programs like Section 8, among other housing subsidy services. These examples are in addition to the instances of interpersonal attacks on people who are speaking Spanish and other languages in (white) public space, where attackers cite the EO.
We echo and support recent statements by sister organizations that oppose this EO:

As scholars who study how language shapes social life, we seek to increase awareness of how language is implicated in social discrimination and, where appropriate, respond to specific instances of language-related discrimination and injustice. As such, we reiterate our strong opposition to the March 1 Executive Order.

Dear Colleagues,

The Language and Social Justice Committee (LSJ) of the Society for Linguistic Anthropology (SLA) is holding a general meeting on Friday, Oct 10th from 1:00-2:30 PDT/4:00-5:30 EST. Here is the Zoom link<https://csus.zoom.us/j/81091795124> to join the meeting (meeting ID: 810 9179 5124).

The main goals for this meeting are to give you some updates and to (re)orient/(re)establish our collective work in this new academic year and the ongoing challenges of the current socio-political climate. There will be allocated time to re-connect with or join and collaborate in our previously established working groups (see the list below).

The working groups that were active during our last general meetings are:

  * Mother languages, heritage languages, indigenous languages/International Mother Language Day (IMLD) working group
  * Language and gender/LGBTQ+ working group
  * Accessibility (not only related to disability, but also linguistic, economic, epistemic, etc.) working group
  * Language “destandardization”/raciolinguistics/academic language working group
  *   Surveillance/freedom of speech
  *   Book club

Of course, other ideas/pressing concerns can be discussed and alternative/new working groups can be formed around those as needed.

We hope to see as many of you there!

For accessibility and accommodations, please email Nadxieli at toledobustamante at csus.edu<mailto:toledobustamante at csus.edu> by October 1st.

Warmly,

Nadxieli Toledo Bustamante, on behalf of the LSJ Steering Committee
