Dear colleagues,

Please see below for a message from the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) working group asking us to participate in a crowdsourcing survey:

International Mother Language Day (IMLD), celebrated on 21 February, was established by UNESCO in 1999 to commemorate the students who were killed in 1952 during demonstrations in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for the recognition of Bangla. The day honors their sacrifice and affirms the right of all people to speak, learn, and preserve their mother tongues. It is celebrated globally to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, multilingual education, and the protection of endangered languages.

The IMLD Task Force, a working group of the SLA’s Committee on Language & Social Justice inspired by Ana Celia Zentella's work on this subject, has created a short survey<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://forms.gle/cJAzDDNYKjsbk38r9__;!!FcsZvA!VQOeUxSMdoDAwt2srgTLw8fx-E3IkJjLfU9qF8QppCPW1e3GHb7ESDYH8F8z0rBqlrQ7KPgoFcCLAAbfMDra38_-ASUGEpS6$> to gather input on IMLD celebrations that you or your colleagues have organized—both those that were successful and those that posed challenges. Our goal is to collect experiences, ideas, and resources that can help others plan meaningful events in their own institutions and communities, with the aim of making them publicly accessible through an open-access platform (to be determined).

We would be very grateful if you could complete the survey<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://forms.gle/cJAzDDNYKjsbk38r9__;!!FcsZvA!VQOeUxSMdoDAwt2srgTLw8fx-E3IkJjLfU9qF8QppCPW1e3GHb7ESDYH8F8z0rBqlrQ7KPgoFcCLAAbfMDra38_-ASUGEpS6$> and share it with others who may be interested. To ensure we have enough time to organize the materials and make them publicly available in time for the 2026 celebration on February 21st, we kindly ask that you submit your responses by December 24th.

With appreciation,

The IMLD Task Force
Please contact Yliana Rodríguez<mailto:ylianarodriguez at gmail.com> if you have questions about the survey or the working group
