The Society for Linguistic Anthropology mourns the untimely passing of our colleague, Shannon Ward. Shannon had been the SLA’s digital media manager for several years, providing vital support for SLA’s website and working hard to ensure that the SLA had a vigorous and stable online presence. Until recently Shannon was an Assistant Professor of Anthropology, in the Department of Community, Culture, and Global Studies at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. Her beautifully written and well-received book, Amdo Lullaby: An Ethnography of Childhood and Language Shift on the Tibetan Plateau, emerging from her long-term research with children in Tibet, was published in 2024 by the University of Toronto Press. She held a BA in Anthropology from Wellesley College, and an MA, MPhil, and PhD in Anthropology from New York University.
Shannon was an essential member of our SLA and linguistic anthropology communities, and will be deeply missed.
Shannon’s family asks that donations in her memory be sent to The Tibetan Culture Society of BC, University of British Columbia Okanagan, or your local pet shelter. Shannon’s mother, Kim Ward, can be reached directly at Moosikim at gmail.com.
