-------------------------------- Message 1 -------------------------------
Dear LINGLITE Subscribers,
If you've been following our fund drive, you will have seen our cute
little Fund Drive piggy become ever more colourful as donations have
come in. Thanks to all the generous people and organizations listed
at the end of this message, we have now raised close to $45,000.
However, we are still $3,000 short of our goal. We need to raise
$48,000 this year in order to maintain the same number of student
editors into next year.
We'd love to make a final push and meet our target by the end of the
week. This is why we have sent this special issue out to you all.
Running a web-based organization is becoming ever more expensive. The
decline of free internet service providers and free web space (in
America and Europe, at least) is testimony to this. Also, an
increasing number of free web sites are restricting access to paid
subscribers only. Read all about it...
*
Want information online? Then you'd better be prepared to pay for it.
That's the first line in an article that appeared in the Detroit Free
Press recently. Reporter Mike Wendland wrote about the current trend
among Internet content providers to charge for information that used
to be free. Among those who have made the change are newspapers,
magazines, and dictionaries. Users now have to pay a subscription fee
to access both the Wall Street Journal and the unabridged version of
Webster's Third New International Dictionary (which has twice as many
definitions as the free dictionary!) In fact, I had to pay to get the
text for the Free Press article I am quoting, and I subscribe to the
print version!
The article states that there is a notice at one of the sites that
explains its recent switch to paid access: "We're frustrated at being
limited and unable to provide the quantity or quality content and
services we want to. Thus, a blend of subscription and
advertising...is the only solution."
Although we at LINGUIST feel the same frustration, as a non-profit
organization, we cannot resort to either advertising or paid
subscriptions to defray our costs. We must rely solely on the support
of the people who use LINGUIST. The Wall Street Journal charges $59.00
a year for people who don't subscribe to the print version, and about
half that for those who do. It currently has more than 500,000 paying
customers. LINGUIST has 15,600 subscribers and together its main site
and 4 mirror sites receive over three million hits per week! Every
single one of those people reading LINGUIST does so at absolutely no
charge! No hidden costs; none of the "bait and switch" techniques used
by those who use free content to attract readers, getting them used to
the service, then eventually charging for it.
All content on LINGUIST is free. It always has been; it always will
be. But doesn't it seem that if the Wall Street Journal can get a half
million people to pay to read its web version, LINGUIST should have no
trouble getting voluntary contributions from among its 15,600
subscribers? So far, about 500 of those subscribers have stepped
forward. What about the rest of you?

So if you have not donated yet, please go to
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to send us your pledge. From
there you have the choice of donating straight away by credit card
using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later. If you do
send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get charged
about $50 a time (sic!) to convert currency (no such problems with a
credit card).
Alternatively, you can hit "Reply" to this message and send us your
pledge right now by email, prior to sending your cheque. Then we will
be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be
able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit
earlier. The address to send cheques is as follows:
The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund
c/o Helen Aristar-Dry
Dept. of English
Eastern Michigan University
Ypsilanti, MI
USA 48197
As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate
donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax
deductible.
Don't forget that in return for a donation of $25 or more, we would
like to send you a snazzy, dark blue LINGUIST T-shirt or sweatshirt.
Already seen in the fashionable areas of Milan* and Paris**, these
shirts are perfect for both the home and the office. See for yourself
at http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html. New this year are LINGUIST
List tote bags, also available at the $25 level. Please let us know
in your pledge which you would like. Remember to let us know your
postal address and what size and style you'd like.
We at LINGUIST really do appreciate your support. We could not
continue without you.
With our sincere thanks,
The LINGUIST Crew:
Anthony, Helen, Andrew, Karen, Naomi, Heather, James, Michael,
Zhen-Wei, Richard, Karolina, Dina, Renee, Steve, Marie, Gayathri,
John, Ljuba, Terry, Simin, Tomoko.
* That's Milan, Michigan, a city a few miles away from the LINGUIST
List offices
** A nickname we temporarily gave Helen and Anthony's sitting room,
for the sake of the accuracy of this letter. The 'fashionable area',
incidentally, is in the corner next to the plants
