Subject: A GUILT TRIP from Monica Macaulay

Dear LINGLITE Subscribers,
In our third of three fund drive issues, we have a lot of good news!
Firstly, we have less than $1,000 to go to reach our target for this
year. Thanks to the kind donations of everyone listed at the end of
this message, we have collected over $47,000. We do not get any
government support for our daily running costs. We depend on you, our
subscribers, to help us support our twelve student editors, and to
help us pay for unexpected and fiendishly expensive repairs to our
server (which you will know was behaving erratically if you tried to
access our site at certain times over the past few days).
Secondly, we have a sparkling new bank account to make donation
easier. A lot of our crew is from outside the United States, and so
we appreciate the difficulty in dealing with a different currency. We
are extremely grateful to Pius ten Hacken who has put enormous effort
into setting up and administering a Swiss bank account for us. This
account has considerably lower charges for currency conversion than

The third piece of news is actually a mixture of good and bad.
Yesterday, we announced that Cascadilla Press had generously organized
a prize draw for all donors where you can win a set of Magnetic
Phonetics 2 IPA fridge magnets. The good news is that the odds of
winning are quite high as there are so far only around 600 entrants.
And herein lies the bad news: out of the thousands of subscribers, and
hundreds of thousands of web site visitors, only a very small fraction
donate.
However, if you have not donated, we do not want to make you feel
guilty. LINGUIST List Advisor Monica Macaulay, on the other hand, has
kindly written this letter to that for us...
Yes, my fellow linguists, fund drive time is a time when we try
various tactics to get you to make a donation to support the Linguist
List, and naturally we are not above trying the GUILT TRIP (a
time-honored method in fund-raising).
(Imagine violins playing mournfully in the background and images of
sad, big-eyed children on the screen.)
* Did you know that the Linguist student editors won't have shoes
next winter if you don't donate? And they live in Michigan, where
there is snow 10 months out of the year (it used to be 11, but with
global warming, it's not so bad any more).
* Did you know that without your donation, Linguist will be reduced
to sending out illegal hoax spam messages to elderly people
requesting their bank account numbers to help catch someone
committing bank fraud?
* Did you know that only about 600 Linguist subscribers out of the
15,600 total ever donate?
* Did you know that all of civilization as we know it will collapse
if you don't help out?
Now... one of these is actually true. Which one do you think it is?
