Dear Lingliters,
Time again for your weekly installment of FundDrive news, and the
letter of the week.
Despite a brief surge last weekend - and another change to the
homepage - this has been a slow week on the donations front. Thank
you to all those who have already donated, and if you haven't pledged
yet please take a moment to do so now.
http://linguistlist.org/donation.html
All those generous donors at the bottom of this email have donated an
impressive total of $25,230, but this is still not even half way to
our target of $60,000. However, we could easily make that target
tomorrow if everybody who currently uses The LINGUIST List dropped
just $5 in our pot! Please consider making a donation. The money
goes to supporting students and maintaining The LINGUIST List website.
Before we get to this week's letter (from LL Advisor, John Lawler) we
have a few more announcments to make.
* Stanford University continues to lead in the Grad School Challenge.
Students - when you donate, don't forget to choose your school and
help put it in the lead!
* This week's Publisher Brain Teaser is a "guess the language" quiz!
Guess even the correct language family and you could win a Cambridge
University Press jounal!
* Finally, our premiums are going fast! To make sure you get your
choice of apron, mousepad, t-shirt or totebag make sure you donate
now!
Information on all this (and more!) at
http://www.linguistlist.org/funddrivelite.html
And now, a word from LL Advisor John Lawler.
*********************************************************************
Dear Colleagues,
It's that time of the year again in the United States. Time for the
pledge drive. Time to get dunned for all the services we get all year
without paying for, that we take for granted as our due, as serious
intellectual people who listen to National Public Radio or watch the
Public Broadcasting System. (A note for those outside the US: public
TV and radio here are not government-supported and need to conduct
periodic fund drives.)
This morning I went to my local Public Radio station to volunteer on
the phones during the pledge drive. It was a lot of fun for me to get
to talk to other listeners who enjoy the programs as much as I do. I
even saw a former student who had also volunteered, and talked to a
couple of people I knew on the phones.
Then I came home and read LINGUIST. I do that every day, just like I
listen to NPR and watch PBS. I saw a lot of linguists I know on the
list of contributors to the LINGUIST pledge drive, including some
former students and some former colleagues.
But not nearly enough.
I've been involved with LINGUIST since it was started. I was Chair of
(what is now) the LSA's Computing Committee when Anthony and Helen
first proposed it, and I did everything I could to help them get it
started, including archiving the posts and inviting them to a
symposium on "Computing and the Ordinary Working Linguist" at LSA the
next year. Since then, I've participated in many LINGUIST projects,
from the Reviews to Ask-a-Linguist to the LINGUIST Advisory Panel.
I've watched LINGUIST grow from being only something that kept Anthony
and Helen from getting enough sleep to an international organization
that continues to be a leader in the utilization of net resources for
academic purposes. They now boss a group of some of the finest
linguistics students I've ever seen, who will boast about their
connection with LINGUIST the rest of their lives. But they still don't
get enough sleep.
LINGUIST runs on less than a shoestring. Any public radio station has
to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars every year; LINGUIST is
shooting for a goal of $60,000 this year. And that's *way* too little,
for the services it produces. Think about it, for you American
linguists-- do you get anything like as much service from your NPR or
PBS station as you do from LINGUIST? Day and night, 24/7, every day of
the year, you can look up *anything* on LINGUIST that has to do with
language or linguistics.
And yet LINGUIST still needs your support. And has to go on for weeks
and weeks to get it. PBS and NPR only need one week to raise much more
money. If you contribute to them, why not to LINGUIST?
Even if *you* could, with a clear conscience, say that *you* don't use
LINGUIST that much, I have news for you: your students do. At least,
the ones who'd like to get a job eventually do. And the ones who
really want to find something in the most efficient way do. And the
ones who need to communicate with the profession as a whole do. And
the ones who are concerned with the future of our profession do. That
is to say, your best students do, even if you don't.
So, why haven't we seen *your* name on the list of contributors to
LINGUIST?
Cheers,
-John Lawler

Subject: How to Donate...
This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $60,000. This money will go
to help keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student
Editors for the coming year.
There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donate.html
You can also pledge right now and pay later, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/pledge.html
For all information on donating, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donation.html
ALREADY PLEDGED?
If you have already pledged to LINGUIST and would now like to pay by
credit card, please go to:
http://linguistlist.org/creditcard-general.html
and select 'PAY PREVIOUS PLEDGE' as the Type of Payment from the
dropdown list provided.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
