***Thank you very much to Monica Macaulay, one of LINGUIST's Advisors,

The Linguist List Quiz:

b. Have a cup of decaf and some melba toast score = 2
c. Read Chomsky's latest monograph while wearing
fishnet stockings score = 3
d. Check my email and read the LINGUIST List score = 4
2. If I win the lottery, I'm going to:
a. Have my nails done score = 1
b. Send half of the money to my mother score = 2
c. Finally send my bank account number to those
poor folks who keep emailing me score = 3

conference or journal to submit it to score = 4

should donate to the LINGUIST List Fund Drive!

not a linguist. You should donate to the LINGUIST List Fund Drive!
If you got between 10 and 13, you're on the path to enlightenment but
you're not quite there yet. You should donate to the LINGUIST List!
Fund Drive (http://linguistlist.org/donation.html)
If you got between 14 and 22, congratulations! You're a real
linguist! You should donate to the LINGUIST List Fund Drive!

Message 2: Why Bother Donating?...Day 59 of Fund Drive!
Date: 13 May 2004 02:32:58 -0000
From: linguist <linguist at linguistlist.org>
Subject: Why Bother Donating?...Day 59 of Fund Drive!
It is day 59 of Fund Drive 2004 and we still have $11,636 to go! Can
you believe that only 810 of our 19,000 subscribers have bothered to
donate to LINGUIST?
This means that there are over 18,000 linguists out there who either:
(a) are too poor to spare a few bucks to help keep us afloat,
(which is hard to believe: $11,636 / 18,000 = not even $0.65! Is
this really the type of living standard we graduate students can
expect from years and years of service?).
or
(b) really believe that we crewmembers all work from home, provide our
own computer equipment and live on nothing but bread and water
(Fund Drive is our opportunity to put faces and personalities to
the crewmembers' names you see every time you stop by our
homepage, or at the top of every email message.
All of your individual donations, however small, help keep us
here.
We need your donations in order to keep LINGUIST running. Please
donate.)
or
(c) think LINGUIST is worthless and couldn't care less
(Fund Drive also allows us to highlight all the many and varied
contributions to the field of linguistics made by The LINGUIST
List.
Quite apart from our primary function as a glorified listserv,
allowing linguists from Newcastle to Nadi to converse quickly and
easily, we also maintain databases of linguistics related
software, books, journals, upcoming conferences and current jobs.
And if *we* don't have what you're looking for, then one of the
one hundred plus other lists we host is bound to!
The LINGUIST List is also heavily involved in the future of
linguistics, with the endangered language and language archiving
projects EMELD and OLAC, as well as keeping allowing excellent
students the opportunity to study linguistics further.)
A huge thank you from all of us here to the generous 639 of you who
have done your bit to keep this service going. If there is anything
we can do to improve our service to you, please do not hesitate to let
us know.
To the rest of you, I sincerely hope you make it out of your financial
dire straits soon and when you do here's a little link you might care
to follow:
http://linguistlist.org/donation.html
Thank you for your time, support and suggestions. We are here to
serve *you*.

From: linguist <linguist at linguistlist.org>>
Subject: Thanks to All New Linguist List Plus Subscribers!
Dear All,
After our little reminder about Linguist List Plus two weeks ago
(Linguist 15.1389), over one hundred of you dear subscribers decided
to support The LINGUIST List and save yourselves some green by
subscribing to Blackwell's wonderful service.
It is support like this that allows us to develop new and exciting
extensions to current LINGUIST services. For example, all LL+
subscribers can now log in to their accounts direct from The LINGUIST
List and get straight to one-click shopping access!
On top of this, the hundred new LL+ subscribers join hundreds more
linguistics professionals worldwide who are already benefiting from:
* 30% off all Blackwell titles plus FREE SHIPPING!
* 20% off all Blackwell journals plus FREE SHIPPING!
* Free sample chapters to many titles!
* Free access to full texts of many books, including the popular
"Handbook" series!
* Free access to LABS (Linguistics Abstracts Online), 15,000
abstracts from nearly 300 linguistics journals published since
1985!
With discounts like these, the $55 subscription fee (reduced to $35
for students) pays for itself with just 3 book purchases!
AND, best of all, 20% of your subscription fee goes to supporting
students on LINGUIST List!
LINGUIST List would like to thank all current LINGUIST List Plus
subscribers, and invites the rest of the community to take advantage
of this wonderful service that gives you a great discount, and helps
LINGUIST List, too!

Message 4: How to Donate...
Date: 16 Mar 2004 08:56:08 -0000
From: linguist <linguist at linguistlist.org>
Subject: How to Donate...
This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $60,000. This money will go
to help keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student
Editors for the coming year.
There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donate.html
You can also pledge right now and pay later, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/pledge.html
For all information on donating, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donation.html
ALREADY PLEDGED?
If you have already pledged to LINGUIST and would now like to pay by
credit card, please go to:
http://linguistlist.org/creditcard-general.html
and select 'PAY PREVIOUS PLEDGE' as the Type of Payment from the
dropdown list provided.
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
