Dear Subscribers,
Have you voted yes for the Wikipedia Update yet? If this is the first
time you're hearing about this, please read the abridged version of
Dr. Barbara Partee's proposal sent to LINGUIST List from Moscow.
'Linguists in Moscow are getting organized about filling in gaps in
linguistics coverage in the Russian-language Wikipedia . . . . It
seems to me that the English-language Wikipedia also needs some effort
to improve linguistics coverage...Having fuller linguistic coverage
would be one good way to reach out to prospective students and to help
educate the broader public, as well as providing resources and links
for all of us. Is there a chance that Linguist List could help
coordinate such an effort? You have the optimal channels and the
breadth to reach everyone, if you could possibly take it on - to get
the word out and ask people to suggest what new entries are needed,
and then to call for volunteers to write new entries and improve
existing ones. Not that you guys should try to write or edit or screen
articles, but to be a hub and a prod and a facilitator. The
"community" should do the editing.'
To read more about this effort, visit:

A number of you have already contributed $3087 towards the goal. We
still need another $2913 by 12 pm Wednesday (EST) in order to take on
this project. So thank you to those who have already contributed, and
keep up the good work for the benefit of the discipline!

Subject: Featured Linguists: Wolfram, Boyd, & Hyman
Dear Subscribers,
This week LINGUIST List is featuring three new Linguists of the Day:
Walt Wolfram - Monday, April 2
Raymond Boyd - Wednesday, April 4
Larry Hyman - Friday, April 6
Be sure to check out their inspirational stories, and after you read,
don't forget to donate!
Many of you who donate to Fund Drive do so in order to support the
student crew, thereby contributing to the future of
linguistics. Without your donations, we, the LINGUIST graduate
students, probably would not have had the chance to meet and interact
with the linguists who will ultimately influence our lives and
careers. This year, as a special treat for our subscribers, each of us
on the LINGUIST graduate crew has asked a linguist who has been
influential in our lives to share with us how they first became
interested in linguistics. Their personal stories are avaialable
here:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your
employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that
doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an
extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates
such a program.
Note: the donors' names are appended to every fund drive message sent
to the main list. You can also see the list of all donors by clicking

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
