Subject: Help LINGUIST raise an extra $2000 in the Advisors' Challenge

Dear Colleagues,

The LINGUIST List Fund Drive is up and running! We are all by now
accustomed to this annual event. It is mildly annoying, as all fund
raisers are, though less so because of the really imaginative - and
different! - approach taken by the Linguist List crew. After all, who
doesn't like a good Superhero? The Drive is, alas, entirely necessary
if we are to continue to enjoy the good services of the LINGUIST List;
this is perhaps obvious but needs to be stated once in a while.

The LINGUIST List Advisory Panel is involved as usual. For those who
don't know us, we are a group of 31 linguists from around the world
who serve as a sounding board for the List, providing reactions,
guidance (business, technical, project, etc), and encouragement to
Helen, Anthony, and the whole crew. Some of us are from academia, and
others from business and industry. You can find a list of all
advisors at http://www.linguistlist.org/advisory.html.

We also help out with the Fund Drive, which is why I'm writing today.
Last year for the first time, the Advisors put together our own
challenge to the rest of the LL subscribers and raised $8,492 for the
List through our donations and the matching funds that were collected
during a 48-hour period. It was, to put it mildly, a success!!! So,
we are doing it again. We have pledged $2,000 and did so in a very
short amount of time before the Fund Drive began.

We challenge the rest of you (remember we are 31 strong - and I mean
STRONG - and you are some 25,000) to match and multiply our amount
within 48 hours.

Multiply by what, you may ask. That is up to you. We think that
ten-fold would be quite reasonable (after all, think again about 31 of
us and 25,000 of you - or 24,969 subtracting our 31), but we will be
pleased with a four-times challenge. For our $2,000, we dare you (a
stronger verb than challenge) to pledge $8,000 among you during the 48
hour period from today to Thursday. That would bring the 48-hour
total to $10,000 - which leaves us within a whisker of meeting our
goal.

To donate right now, go to https://linguistlist.org/donation/donate/donate1.cfm
or look below this email for more information.

And an added bonus - much as we enjoy thinking about Linguistic
Superheroes, think how much faster the Fund Drive can be brought to an
end if the challenge is met, bringing peace of mind to Helen, Anthony,
the rest of us who are directly involved, and, really, the whole
community of LINGUIST List subscribers.

With appreciation in advance,

Regards,

Margaret Winters
On behalf of the entire LINGUIST-List Advisory Panel

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your
employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that
doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an
extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates
such a program.

Note: the donors' names are appended to every fund drive message sent
to the main list. You can also see the list of all donors by clicking

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
