Dear Stuart,
With reference to your posting of the 28 January, it is
nice to know that someone remembers my 1985 paper.
The following papers of mine are also relevant to Hopper and
Thompson's transitivity theory.

(1) 1988. Antipassives in Warrungu and other Australian
languages. In Masayoshi Shibatani (ed.), 595-649. Amsterdam:
John Benjamins.
On pp.633-34, I point out problems with Hopper and Thompson's
theory, including two counterexamples, from
Australian languages, to their claim.

(2) 1991. Sekai no gengo to nihongo ('The world's languages
and Japanese'). Tokyo: Kurosio Publishers.
This book is written in Japanese. In Chapter 5, I present my view
on transitivity (essentially a modification of Hopper and
Thompson's), including a critique of their view. I also present my
view on intransitivity.

(3) 1994. Transitivity. In R.E. Asher et al. (eds.), Encyclopedia of
Language and Linguistics, Vol.9:4670-77. Oxford: Pergamon Press.
I present my view on transitivity (essentially a modification of
Hopper and Thompson's), including a critique of their view. I also
present my view on intransitivity.

(4) Transitivity and intransitivity. MS.
I review and summarize approaches to transitivity. I also
propose my view on intransitivity, which is an elaboration of
the brief statement in my works 1991 and 1994.

The following book provides interesting discussions of
transitivity and intransitivity in Japanese.

Jacobsen, W.M. 1991. The transitive structure of events in
    Japanese. Tokyo: Kurosio Publishers.

I hope this information is useful.

Best wishes,

Tasaku
