CROSS-LINGUISTIC REFERENCE GRAMMAR DATABASE PROJECT
The University of Munich seeks to appoint as soon as possible a
full-time Research Assistant (Typological Linguist) to work on a
project that develops a flexible database structure for
cross-linguistic reference grammars, descriptions of natural languages
optimized for cross-linguistic queries.
The team will consist of the PI, the person appointed, a half-time
linguist specializing in syntax, a computer scientist and a student
assistant. The post is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
(German Research Association). Funding is guaranteed for two years,
continuation on a related project possible. The position is at the
rank of "Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter", the salary is according to
the German payscale of BAT IIa, starting from about 65 000 DM per
year, depending on age and familiy status.
The central challenge for the postholder will be to develop, together
with the team and on the basis of previous work, a
cross-linguistically uniform database organisation of descriptive
material about the grammar and lexicon of natural languages of any
type (including signed languages) and give it its final shape.
The successful candidate will
* have a Ph.D. in linguistics or an equivalent degree in hands,
* be familiar with the typological diversity of the world's languages,
* have some acquaintance with at least one formal grammar framework
(like HPSG, LFG/OT, PP/MP),
* have a specialization in at least one of the following: phonology,
morphology (especially of polysynthetic languages), lexicology,
* have a native speaker competence in or a very good knowledge
of English and at least a working knowledge of German,
* have computer literacy, ideally including experience with databases
and/or the World-Wide Web,
* be able to work in a small team and in collaboration with people from
other disciplines (computer science).
