Dear all,
I agree with Elena's proposal that the outgoing EC should put the thorny
question of the ALT venues on the agenda.
A possible solution could be having the ALT conferences immediately before
or after the ICHL and at the same place(next venue Melbourne 2001; than
Copenhague 2003; 2002
second week of July, there will be in Oaxaca the next World Congress of
Linguists). The problem is of course to find typologists, probably already
involved in the organization of ICHL, willing to organize an ALT conference
too....
Basically, however, I would have no objections to Bill Croft's proposal to
shift our conferences to even-years.
To the American colleagues who complain the overlapping of the August timing
with the beginning of the semester activities I would like to object that
August is the only period of the year when most European universities have
vacations -and linguists too need some rest!
Best, Paolo
